Can You Replace Your Roof in the Winter?

Winter is the time where you may start noticing problems with your roof. If you’re experiencing ceiling leaks, missing shingles or drafts then it’s probably time to consider replacing your roof. Here are some factors to consider if you’re trying to plan when to start this project.

Ideal Temperatures

Preferably, shingles should be replaced when the weather is between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If it’s too cold outside, shingles can easily crack when they’re being installed. You might be able to still get a great deal in the winter season, but your contractor will make sure that installation takes place when it’s at least 40 degrees outside.

Shingles aren’t the only thing you have to be careful with in cooler temperatures – it’s also important that it’s warm enough outside that the adhesive can properly seal. These sealing strips easy bond in the warmer seasons, but in the winter your installer will wait until the temperature is high enough for the adhesive to seal properly.

Careful Maintenance

You may find that your roof requires some maintenance, but the whole roof does not need to be replaced. If this is the case, make sure to be extra cautious in colder temperatures! For example, if you are conducting maintenance on your roof you should be careful when stepping over shingles – they tend to break more easily in the cold. Similarly, traffic on your roof may cause some seals and bonds to break. If this happens, you may have to hand-seal the shingles that are peeling from your roof. Of course, you can always call Momentum Home for professional help and to prevent further damage.

Planning for Spring

If you don’t have damage that needs to be immediately addressed, the winter is a great time to start planning your project to be completed in the spring. This may be an easier time to get work done since temperatures are typically higher. If you do need immediate maintenance, however, you can still work through the winter season – we simply suggest that you get professional help to ensure that the proper technique is used from start to finish. This way, you can get the job done right the first time and avoid possible additional work or damage in the future.
